Research Associate for Social Emotional Instructional Content

3C Institute is a Durham-based R&D company devoted to creating proven technologies to improve health and well-being on a global scale.

3C is looking for a researcher with expertise in social emotional learning (SEL) in children including (a) a thorough understanding of the research literature in social skills and social emotional and behavioral research for elementary and middle school aged children; (b) experience writing social emotional learning (SEL) curricula, activities, and scenarios for teaching social emotional skills with youth (K-8 grades); and (c) clinical experience working with youth to enhance their social emotional skills.

As a research associate, you will provide leadership in the area of instructional design, including creation of research-based instructional scripts and activities for online and game-based SEK interventions. You will work in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment where you will learn from and contribute development of SEL games and online learning programs as a team alongside experienced game developers, researchers, graphic artists, and animators.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to think creatively about scripting gameplay social problem solving scenarios that are based in the research literature and engaging for youth

  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, and committed to excellence
  • Experience managing individual projects including prioritizing work to meet timelines and milestones
  • Ability to work well in a team environment—excellent communication and collaboration skills

Additional Experience (Helpful to have, but not required)

  • Education and/or work experience designing or developing games for learning
  • Passion for applied research (for real-world impact on children and families)
  • Prolific writing skills, both scientific and instructional
  • Skills in statistical software programs, e.g., SPSS, R, SAS
  • Experience working within school settings

Degree Requirements: Masters or PhD level training from an accredited college or university in psychology, education, behavioral health science or equivalent discipline
