LifeStories for Kids: Indigenous American Cultural Heritage (LS-IACH) will feature professional IA storytellers sharing both traditional and experiential stories representing the diverse origins of IA individuals as well as IA life experiences. In IA populations, differing cultural expectations and norms have been found to contribute to the development of negative outcomes such as school drop-out, depression, and substance abuse. Interventions that celebrate cultural heritage and promote an understanding of cultural diversity can effectively engender an integrated, accepting school environment, thereby fostering social emotional, behavioral, and academic benefits for all children. Specifically, research suggests social acceptance of IA students and integration into the school community are key environmental factors that promote positive functioning. LS-IACH will share IA values and traditions, explore similarity and diversity across IA populations, and celebrate cultural heritage. The accompanying LS-IACH curriculum will expand upon story concepts and extend learning through a variety of classroom-based activities. These activities will reflect social learning and cognitive-behavioral theoretical perspectives and incorporate techniques, strategies, and methods of teaching that have been found effective for improving children’s social relationships and behavior.
