Dr. Melissa DeRosier, CEO and founder of 3C Institute, will serve as one of the keynote speakers at the Lowcountry Autism Forum on September 19 in Charleston, South Carolina. The Forum is an annual event held by the Lowcountry Autism Consortium that brings together healthcare providers, educators, researchers, autism organizations, civic and community groups, and family members who have a child or relative with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is the largest, free autism conference in the world and is expected to draw over 1,000 attendees.
Dr. DeRosier’s speech will explain how personalized learning games give students with ASD a safe place to learn social and emotional skills as well as why these games are well suited for rural areas with a shortage of providers trained in delivering in-person social skills programs.
Dr. DeRosier will also give a breakout session with 3C Institute Senior Research Associate Dr. Debra Childress. Their talk will focus on using comic book generation software to engage children with ASD to build social and emotional skills and feature a live demonstration of Stories in Motion, the 3C Institute-developed game that integrates this software with social narrative best practices to help children with ASD visualize and achieve social success.
Dr. Childress will deliver a second breakout session on strategies to help students with ASD successfully transition to a higher education environment. Her presentation will include a discussion on challenges and solutions in transitioning, five topics to review with an educator to initiate the process, and demonstrations of PREP and SCoRE®: Propel, two 3C Institute-developed web-based programs that help students with ASD develop skills to effectively transition.
3C Institute will also have an exhibit table featuring Stories in Motion, PREP, and SCoRE: Propel offered to attendees at an exclusive discount. SCoRE: Propel is currently available at scoreforcollege.org, and Stories in Motion and PREP are available for preorder through Personalized Learning Games.
